Priorities for this New City Council
The Election Over ... City Council faces some tough decisions ...
1. What will Port Metro bring back to us as options for the design of the Low Level Road? Will we get our $1 million dollar contribution to the design work back? I voted against this contribution in the 1st place ... Port Metro ARE Developers & as such should have brought us the completed design work at their expense. The designs should come to Council late January 2012.
2. What to do about Harry Jerome Rec Center? Preserving the fields is an absolute. Once all the info on desired service is in, we will be able to make some decisions on how to proceed. I am a proponent of a 50 meter pool here ... this will take some negotiation with the District.
3. The Official Community Plan or OCP update process will kick into high gear. What kind of North Vancouver City do you want to live in? During the election campaign it was erroneously stated by the Mayor & his slate that growth has been 1% per year. Not so ... check out this link to latest BC Population growth stats ... http://www.bcstats.gov.bc.ca/data/pop/pop/estspop.asp#totpop More like 3.6% and in my view climbing. The Onni project for the Safeway site at 13 & Lonsdale is coming in at DOUBLE the density allowed in our OCP.
The Density Genie is just about out of the Bottle ... never to go back in!
4. Residential at Harbourside? Council put off a decision on a Task Force to look into residential down near the AutoMall. It will be returning early in the new term. We need to preserve what precious industrial land we have to accommodate such uses. With the awarding of the ship building contracts ... we will need this space for component manufacturers to these ships. Good jobs that add to Our Community & Our Sustainability.
5. Taxes ... during the campaign I heard from many Seniors that they are being taxed off of the North Shore. Living on a fixed income has become a real challenge. I am committed to keeping tax increases to a minimum.
and the list goes on ...
